And now, a populist surge threatens the assumptions and achievements of politicians and policy makers from mainstream parties, whether center-left or center-right. The populists core diagnosis that working people and the middle class are being left behind is correct. But their prescriptions are wrong. Often catastrophically so.
This presents an urgent opportunity for the vast political center here in America and across the developed world which has strength in numbers but is seen by too many as guardians of a failed status quo. The center must reassert itself, with a robust agenda that:
- Rethinks the core functions of government and
- Helps citizens navigate and thrive through the technological, social and cultural change that will only accelerate in the years ahead.
This is the work of The New Center.
